The original Shake-A-Shelf
Shake-A-Shelf began in Massachusetts in December 2022, when artist Scott Caz created the original shakable miniature bookshelf.
He wanted a miniature library that did not have to stay perfect. Instead of fixing every tiny book in place, he left them free to tumble, shift, and be arranged again inside an openable display frame.
That first handmade piece grew into the Shake-A-Shelf line and helped spark the wider online fascination with “anxiety bookshelves,” fidget bookcases, and other shakable miniature libraries. Scott is still the artist and maker behind the original work.
Why the books move
The motion is part of the artwork. A Shake-A-Shelf can be organized carefully, shaken into chaos, rearranged by hand, or left exactly where the books land. There is no single correct arrangement.
From one shelf to three models
The original full-size design evolved through handmade releases and preorder batches into today’s three core models:
- The Original Shake-A-Shelf: 10.5 × 8.5 × 3 inches with roughly 200 miniature books. Available in white and black.
- The Nook: 8.5 × 4 × 3 inches with roughly 75 miniature books, designed to live between full-size books, work as a bookend, or hang on a wall. Available in white and black.
- The Short Stack: 5 × 4 × 3 inches with roughly 35 miniature books. Available in white and black.
Made by hand
Current Shake-A-Shelf models use handmade basswood shelving, miniature books folded individually from paper around a foam core, and openable radiata-pine shadow-box frames made for Shake-A-Shelf. Every current shelf model is signed and numbered by Scott.

Scott Caz is the original artist and creator behind Shake-A-Shelf—the 2022 work at the heart of the wider shakable miniature bookshelf phenomenon. He designs and hand-makes the shelving and miniature books in Massachusetts, and continues to develop the collection from the same simple idea: tiny books, a handmade shelf, and permission to let things get a little messy.
